Repairs were expected to resume on Monday, before the new breach developed. It's a sad day in the Museum ship world.

"BUFFALO, N.Y. (WUTV) — A historic World War II Naval ship under repairs is now sinking in Buffalo and Erie County Naval & Military Park in New York.
Tumblr media
Crews have been repairing holes in USS The Sullivans in August 2021 and it started taking on water Wednesday night.
Tumblr media
The ship is a Fletcher-class Destroyer. It was the largest ship of its kind used to fight in WWII.
Commissioned in 1943 the USS The Sullivans survived action in World War II, the Korean War, and the Cuban Missile Crisis before it was decommissioned in 1965 after earning 11 battle stars.
In February 2021, the 78-year-old ship reached emergency repair status when a high amount of water penetrated the hull.
Divers were temporarily patching holes in the bottom of the boat caused by decades of rusting and erosion.
Tumblr media
On April 4 of this year, Park President Paul Marzello and Rep. Brian Higgins announced $490,000 in federal dollars to help with repairs. They warned about the ship taking on water and needing to act quickly.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
'What you see now is a vessel that's floating, however below the waterline, that's the critical point that we talk about. Below the waterline is where she is damaged,' Marzello said. 'We have several perforations that need to be patched, we have several works that need to be formed on the interior ship, on the underside, down near the keel is probably the area where she needs the most work.'"

USS the Sullivans
Many of you may know that Steven Spielberg was inspired by the story of the five Sullivan brothers to make his epic film, Saving Private Ryan (1998).  In the aftermath of the Japanese attack at Pearl Harbor, five brothers from Waterloo, Iowa enlisted in the U.S. Navy and served together on the light cruiser, USS Juneau.  Their names were George, Francis, Joseph, Madison and Albert Sullivan.  Their story is tragic because in November 1942, the Juneau was sunk by a Japanese submarine and all five men perished.  Their story is also immortalized in the movie The Fighting Sullivans (1944).
In 1943, the U.S. Navy honored the Sullivans by naming a destroyer after them, USS the Sullivans.  The ship served during the rest of World War II, the Korean War and other engagements afterwards.  After it was decommissioned in 1965, no one wanted to maintain and clean the ship as the spirits of the Sullivan brothers were apparently haunting the ship.
Not active while the destroyer was still on active duty, but the ghosts made themselves known when the ship was retired.  What did the workers see and hear?  The workers on the Sullivan at it retirement reported seeing flying objects, weird sounds and terrifying moans.  They witnessed fleeting glimpses of young men dressed in World War II-era naval uniforms.  An electrician’s mate refuse to come aboard on Friday the 13th as he claimed the last time he was on board on that date, an unseen hand had reached out from the bulkhead, grabbed him by the ankle and tripped him.
After the Friday the 13th story became known, others felt it was safe to come forward with their frightening stories.  Here are what was reported:
A toolbox snatched out of the hands of another electrician’s mate by an unseen hand.
Five glowing spheres passing in a darkened hallway.
Chills and a sense of dread upon boarding the ship.
A skeptic had trouble breathing and buzzing in his ears after boarding.
Most of the reported events occurred while the ship was docked in Philadelphia but when it was relocated, the activity slowed dramatically.
In 1977, the USS Sullivan was donated to the Buffalo and Erie County Naval & Military Park (Buffalo, New York).  In 1986, the ship was designated as a National Historical Landmark.
The story of the five Sullivan brothers and their deaths led to immediate policy changes within the U.S. Navy regarding family members serving together.  The story of the haunting is not well known outside the small group of people who worked on board and experienced the spirits of George, Francis (Frank), Joseph (Red), Madison (Matt) and Albert (Al) Sullivan.

WWII Navy ship partially sinks in Buffalo, New York

New York (Times Of Ocean)- Rescue efforts are underway for a decommissioned World War II-era Navy vessel partially submerged in New York waters.
According to the US Coast Guard Buffalo Sector, the historic USS The Sullivans took on water and partially sank at Buffalo and Erie County Naval & Military Park.
Officials say the 78-year-old ship suffered a breach on Thursday as its right side tilted into Lake Erie.
Over 3 million gallons of water flooded the historic ship, according to the Coast Guard.
“This ship will rise again,” Naval and Military Park President Paul Marzello told the Buffalo News. “Failure is not an option.”
Kathy Hochul, the governor of New York and a Buffalo native, said emergency services are prepared to save the ship, which has been a museum ship since 1977.
“The USS The Sullivans is a tribute to our heroes — to a family that lost all five of its sons in the Pacific, and to the 400,000 Americans who died fighting in World War II,” Hochul said. “Our State agencies are on site and ready to help revive this treasure and symbol of perseverance.”
